The Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Adopt-A-Trail program provides a volunteer opportunity for interested individuals, businesses and groups to participate in trail cleanup and support the Capital Area Greenway System. The citizen volunteer agrees to maintain the greenway trail quarterly for at least one year. The citizen volunteer must sign an Adopt-A-Trail Agreement. Staff request the volunteer report any vandalism or suspicious activity.

Terms & Conditions of the Adopt-A-Trail Program

These are the minimum responsibilities that accompany the adoption of a trail segment for one year. The Citizen Volunteer or group will complete the following tasks quarterly as part of this program:
  1. Litter and Debris Removal: Pick up litter and debris along trail corridor. Place materials in receptacles if available, otherwise bag materials and place bags and other collected debris just off trail for collection by Department staff.
  2. Tree Condition Assessment: Check trees for broken limbs, trunk damage and/or decay, cavities, lightning damage, etc. Note any split or leaning trees.
  3. Trail Maintenance (Paved Trail Segments Only): Inspect paved trail surface and report any potholes, surface cracking, settling or other unusual conditions.
  4. Bridge Inspection: Inspect bridges/boardwalks for damaged deck boards, handrails and other components.
  5. Trail Amenity Inspection: Inventory and inspect condition of any trail amenities located within the adopted trail segment.
  6. Report immediate hazards or vandalism to the Department or contact 911 if emergency or unsafe.
  7. Complete and submit the quarterly report form after each volunteer date.
